The Up-gradation project for NH-244, spanning from Km 29+030 to Km 31+449, is a significant infrastructure endeavour aimed at transforming the region’s connectivity. This project involves the construction of a 2.419 km long Uni-Directional Khellani Tunnel, complemented by its approach road. The initiative features two twin tube tunnels, each extending approximately 1.55 km, along with a 160-meter major bridge. Designed to enhance the travel experience, this project will reduce travel time from 5 minutes to just 2.40 minutes, cutting down the travel time by 2.60 minutes. With an overall width of 11 meters, including paved and earthen sections, the upgraded highway will provide a safer and more efficient route, thus alleviating accident-prone areas and boosting local connectivity.
This development is a vital step towards improving transportation infrastructure in the Doda District. The strategic road will serve as a crucial alternate route to the Kashmir Valley, ensuring enhanced connectivity to local villages and towns. Beyond the practical benefits of reduced travel time and improved safety, this project is set to foster socio-economic growth by mitigating regional imbalances. The Khellani Tunnel stands out as the first unidirectional tunnel with twin tubes in the area, featuring innovative technical elements such as a major bridge with a maximum pier height of 53.84 meters. This ambitious undertaking reflects a commitment to modernizing infrastructure while catering to the evolving needs of the community.
