In a significant boost to Jammu & Kashmir’s (J&K) infrastructure development, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) is transforming the Chenani-Sudhmahadev NH segment into a two-lane road with paved shoulders. This 17 Km project is part of the NH-244 and will not only ensure year-round connectivity but also be a game-changer for the local economy and people.
The upgraded highway will provide greater access to local religious sites including Mantalai and enhance connectivity between Chenani, Sudhmahadev, Goha, Khellani and Khanabal. The project features the construction of a major bridge, two minor bridges, 16 culverts, a vehicular underpass, a pedestrian underpass, and two bus bays. The ongoing project will address the challenges posed by the existing Batote-Kishtwar NH, which often gets blocked during adverse weather conditions, leaving travellers stranded. The alternate route is designed to remain operational even during snowfall and heavy rains, ensuring
uninterrupted connectivity and safer travel experiences. Additionally, the new NH alignment will bypass the sinking zone near Baglihar Dam and provide an alternate route to Kashmir Valley. Additionally, the current NH-244 has several sharp turns, serpentine curves and poor geometry, leading to numerous accidents each year. The ongoing alignment will improve its geometry and overall usability. As a result, accidents can be prevented and traffic flow will be smoother.
Once completed, this new highway will provide a reliable and resilient transportation artery, mitigating the risks associated with the existing route and enhancing the overall connectivity of the region. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s “Pragati Ka Highway” vision, aimed at achieving efficient, hassle-free and environmentally responsible mobility in J&K. The project will also reduce the travel time to only 20 minutes from the current 60 minutes. Furthermore, the new alignment will ably support the smooth movement of our security forces to the border locations.
The enhanced connectivity will facilitate trade, create employment opportunities and boost the regional economy. Economy: A thriving horticulture and agriculture sectors and tourism play a vital role in J&K, contributing immensely to the region’s economic growth. The picturesque Kashmir Valley is also renowned for its sericulture and cold-water fisheries industries. Tourism, horticulture and agriculture form the backbone of the region, providing large-scale employment opportunities and driving growth. Promote tourism: Located 42 km from Patnitop and 112 km from Jammu, the revered Shiva temple of Sudh Mahadev is a treasure trove of spiritual significance and natural beauty. It is believed to be over 3,000 years old and is the home to the sacred Gouri Kund spring. The temple complex houses a stunning black marble statue of Shiva and Parvati, along with a preserved Trident of Lord Shiva. Nature lovers will be captivated by the mystical underground stream, Devak, considered as sacred as the Ganges, which originates at Sudh Mahadev and disappears among the rocks. The site also features exquisite wooden sculptures crafted by local artisans. Just a few kilometres ahead lies Mantalai top, surrounded by lush deodar forests. According to legend, this is the sacred site where Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. Tourists and yoga enthusiasts can also visit the International Yoga Centre at this place. The project represents a lifeline for the region, offering residents better livelihood opportunities. By improving connectivity, the government aims to enhance the quality of life for J&K’s residents, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for the region. As the project nears completion, J&K is poised for a transformative journey, unlocking its potential for growth, development and prosperity.
